Flyers add Gauthier to defense

The Philadelphia Flyers acquired veteran defenseman Denis Gauthier Jr. Thursday from the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for minor-league forward Josh Gratton and two second-round picks in the 2006 Entry Draft.

Gauthier, 29, is a Montreal native who has 15 goals and 55 assists for 70 points in 429 NHL games over eight NHL seasons with Calgary and Phoenix. He also has 576 penalty minutes and is plus-11 in his career. Gauthier had two goals and 10 assists in 45 games with Phoenix this season and was minus-4 with 61 penalty minutes. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound defenseman was second on the Coyotes with 117 hits. He missed 14 games after Oct. 18 with a broken finger and three games to a shoulder injury in early February.

Gauthier was Calgary's first pick, 20th overall, in the 1996 Entry Draft after an All-Star junior career with Drummondville in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He suffered a serious hip injury during the 1999-00 season.
